Sony has introduced a new PlayStation 5 system update packed with features designed to enhance user experience and protect controller batteries

Key among the updates is an adaptive charging function that adjusts the power delivered to controllers based on their current battery levels. This feature will be available starting today, but it’s limited to the latest PS5 models, including the PS5 Slim and the forthcoming $700 PS5 Pro. It supports PS5 DualSense and DualSense Edge controllers, PlayStation VR2 Sense controllers, and the Access adaptive controller kit. When a controller isn’t connected, the console will cut power to the USB port shortly after entering rest mode, which helps preserve battery life.

Additionally, Sony is rolling out a new “Welcome hub” that allows users to customize their home screen with widgets to track console storage, accessory battery levels, and friends lists. This updated hub is a redesigned version of the US-only Explore tab and will initially be available to select players in the US before a global rollout in the coming weeks.

Today’s update also includes the ability to create personalized 3D audio profiles for headphones or earbuds, and new Remote Play settings for managing user permissions. Aside from adaptive charging, these features will be accessible on all PS5 models.

Moreover, Sony is expanding the capability to share party voice chat invitations via messaging and social media apps, making it easier to connect with players not on your friends list. This feature will be available in the coming weeks, along with a PlayStation App update that will enable mobile sharing of party links.
