Android 17 Launches with New Multitasking Tools and Expanded Pixel Features

Google has officially started distributing Android 17 to supported Pixel devices, bringing a collection of new features and improvements. While the operating system was introduced last month, not every capability showcased during its announcement is available immediately. Additional Pixel-exclusive enhancements are also arriving as part of the latest feature update.

One of the most noticeable additions in Android 17 is the introduction of Bubbles, a built-in floating window system that allows apps to remain accessible on screen. Users can activate these floating windows with a long press, making multitasking more convenient. Larger devices such as tablets and foldables receive extra attention, including a dedicated bubble dock positioned at the bottom of the display for easier management of multiple apps.

The update also introduces Screen Reactions, a feature that lets users capture selfie footage while recording their screen. This makes it much easier to create reaction-based content without relying on additional apps or editing tools. Foldable phones gain enhanced gaming support as well, with a virtual game controller displayed on the lower half of the screen while gameplay remains visible on the upper portion. Android 17 also adds native controller remapping across all compatible devices, alongside new security enhancements and expanded parental control options.

Pixel owners are receiving several exclusive upgrades. The Gemini app is gaining access to the Gemini Omni model, enabling users to generate videos from text prompts. Music generation is also expanding through Lyria 3, which can create audio content from written descriptions. Quick Share is being extended to additional Pixel models, while live call translation is arriving on newer devices. Another notable addition is the wider rollout of Take a Message, making the feature available across most Pixel phones released since the Pixel 6. Meanwhile, conversational editing tools in Google Photos are expanding to more European countries, and Magic Cue recommendations are being integrated into additional messaging applications.

Several features announced alongside Android 17 are still awaiting release. Google has stated that a range of advanced Gemini Intelligence capabilities will begin rolling out later this summer on select high-end devices. These upcoming additions are expected to include the Rambler transcription system, AI-powered widgets, and more sophisticated task automation tools. Other announced features, such as refreshed emoji designs and the Pause Point digital well-being feature, have yet to receive confirmed launch dates.
