Sony is taking Concord offline on September 6th after disastrous launch

Sony is pulling Concord offline starting September 6th due to disappointing sales figures. The first-person hero shooter, which launched exclusively on PS5 and PC on August 23rd, has struggled to gain traction, with sales estimated to be under 25,000 units. The game also peaked at just 697 concurrent players on Steam, a figure lower than that of The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, which has been criticized as one of the worst games of 2023.

In a PlayStation blog post, Concord’s game director, Ryan Ellis, announced the decision to take the game offline. “We’ve decided to take the game offline beginning September 6, 2024, and are exploring alternative options to better connect with our players,” Ellis stated. He also confirmed that sales of Concord will be halted immediately and that full refunds will be issued to all players who purchased the game for PS5 or PC.

Refunds will be processed to the original payment method for those who bought the game through the PlayStation Store. Steam and Epic Games Store users will receive refunds in the coming days.

Launched at $40 after eight years of development, Concord faced tough competition from established free-to-play titles like Overwatch and Valorant. Its lack of distinguishing features failed to capture the market effectively.

Firewalk Studios hints that Concord might adopt a free-to-play model in the future, as suggested by their mention of exploring options to better reach players and the decision to issue refunds. “We’ll keep you updated, and thank you to all the Freegunners who have joined us in the Concord galaxy,” Ellis concluded.
