The current crop of Chromebooks is notably consistent in quality, with models from brands like Asus, Lenovo, Google, HP, Dell, and Samsung showing impressive similarities. For those comparison shopping, this is good news—most of the top models offer great value, especially when found at discounted prices. Older models can also be a bargain, as a laptop that was excellent at $500 a couple of years ago might be a steal at $300 today.
Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 14
Acer’s latest Chromebook Spin, part of the Plus series, stands out as the top Chromebook for 2024. It integrates Google’s Gemini features with ChromeOS and includes a year of Google One AI premium service with 2TB of cloud storage.
It’s powered by an eight-core Intel Core Ultra 5 115U processor, which, despite having fewer cores than its predecessor, offers enhanced performance for AI tasks thanks to its built-in NPU. The Spin 14 also supports LPDDR5 memory, providing faster performance compared to previous models. Additionally, it features two Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports for rapid data transfer and power delivery.
Asus Chromebook Plus CX34
The Asus Chromebook Plus CX34 is the most affordable option with Google’s new Plus certification, priced around $400. It comes with a Core i3 processor, 8GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage—making it a solid choice for those on a tight budget.
Despite its low price, the CX34 impresses with a 1080p screen and webcam, a comfortable keyboard, and a decent trackpad. Battery life is adequate, and like all Plus Chromebooks, it includes ten years of software updates. While spending more can get you better performance, this model sets a high standard for budget Chromebooks.
Asus Chromebook Flip CX5
The Asus Chromebook Flip CX5, though initially priced at $800 in 2021, remains a strong contender if you find it at a discounted rate. It features a Core i5 processor and 15GB of RAM, making it a robust device.
Built to endure everyday wear and tear, it boasts a unique velvety texture and a wide range of ports. The keyboard is smooth and comfortable, and the display is vivid. Although it’s no longer the top choice, if you can find a good deal, it’s worth considering. The CX5 offers solid battery life and some of the loudest audio we’ve heard from a Chromebook.
The version with a 12th-gen Intel i3, 8GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage is nearly as powerful as the Chromebook CX34, with the added benefit of being convertible. However, its webcam quality is not as high as the CX34’s.
