Google Pixel 8A: A Midrange Phone That Might Surpass Expectations

The Pixel 8A has officially launched, following a predictable leak-filled lead-up. Priced at $499 in the US, it offers a range of notable updates, including Google’s latest processor and several new AI features. The standout aspect is its extended software support, matching the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro with seven years of updates—a rare commitment for a midrange device.

Physically, the 8A maintains a similar design to its predecessor but upgrades its 6.1-inch display significantly. The screen now features a higher 120Hz refresh rate, an improvement from the previous 90Hz, and it achieves up to 2,000 nits of peak brightness—40% brighter than before. This makes it competitive with other high-performing midrange displays, such as that of the OnePlus 12R.

In line with the trend of integrating AI, the Pixel 8A includes the same generative AI photo and video tools seen in the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro. These features include Best Take, Magic Editor, and Audio Magic Eraser. It also supports Circle to Search and the upcoming Gemini Nano on-device AI model, though the latter will be available as a developer option via a feature drop, similar to the Pixel 8.

Regarding specifications, the 8A maintains or slightly enhances the previous model’s features. It offers 8GB of RAM and starts with 128GB of storage, with an option to upgrade to 256GB. The camera hardware remains the same as the Pixel 7A, featuring a stabilized 64-megapixel main sensor. It retains the IP67 rating and slightly increases battery capacity to 4,492mAh from 4,385mAh. Wireless charging is supported via Qi 1.3 at 7.5W, though it does not include Qi2.

The Pixel 8A faces unique competition this year. While Samsung’s Galaxy A55 5G seems to be bypassing the US market, giving the 8A a clear path, it competes directly with the OnePlus 12R, which is not available through major US carriers. This puts it in competition with the Pixel 8 itself, which is often discounted and matches the 8A’s $499 price.

As Google navigates the pricing and positioning of its 8-series lineup, with the Pixel 7A still available and potential new models on the horizon, the 8A’s launch is a strategic move. Preorders for the Pixel 8A begin today, with shipments scheduled to start on May 14th.
